UNIT 11 ASSIGNMENT 2 REGIONAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY

Regional press photographer respond to between five and eight photographic jobs daily. Generally, for each of these jobs they will receive very little briefing information aside from common-sense logistical data. A successful press photographer needs to think on their feet, use high level people skills and produce creative images from almost any story.

These features will offer you the opportunity to put into practice a technical approach to your photography whilst experiencing the sort of demands places upon the regional press photographer.

When shooting it is essential that you shoot a wide variety of images from different viewpoints and angles, use different lens choices and aim to get the real heart of the story.

As a new trainee freelance photographer on the desk, you have been given the job of researching, sourcing and securing images for editorial features.

UNIT 11 VISUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 OUT OF SEASON RESORT

Empty beaches, rough seas, victorian architecture and brooding skies - seaside resort 'out of research'. Look for gentle melancholy and nostalgia in our resorts and signs of British eccentricity, such as hardy souls braving the sea or determined octogenarians eating ice cream in the rain.

Visit the beach after a storm and check the tideline of unusual objects, watersports enthusiasts and diehard beachgoers are often out in inclement weather, so head out early and observe their movements.

Produce a documentary style body of work of your interpretation of 'out of season' for your first photo-book publication. You will require 30 plus images as a minimum.

UNIT 11 WORKSHOP ASSIGNMENT

Workshop activities will cover a range of camera lenses and accessories; visual codes such as composition, movements and depth of field alongside technical codes and communication intentions.

You will require reflective blog entries to quantify your understanding of all workshop activities.

UNIT 11, RESEARCH AND PLANNING ASSIGNMENT

PRIMARY / SECONDARY

Regional press photographers respond to between five and eight photographic jobs daily. Generally, for each of these jobs they will receive very little briefing information aside from common-sense logistical data. A successful press photographer needs to think on their feet, use high-level people skills and produce creative images from almost any story. No matter how boring the editorial is.

Your research technique must include both primary and secondary research sources plus examples of historical and contemporary photographic artists.

As part of the planning process use your findings from your findings from your research to develop shooting strategies contingency plans, locations scouting, shots lists and any additional information linked to your creative journey and will be on going throughout the duration of the project and collated in your blog.

UNIT 11 PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTICES

The photographic profession is one which has both a long history and is rapidly evolving. The development of new technologies in digital photography and digital image manipulation has changed the way that we take and process images. However, there remain constants within the practice of photography that underpin all aspects of the profession.

This unit introduces learners to the use of a range of photographic equipment, techniques and processes to underpin the creation of photographic meaning.

UNIT 11 visual assignment 2 regional press photography GUIDANCE & REQUIREMENTS

Research your chosen festivals, awareness days or events and the style of photography used in regional newspapers. Select appropriate camera equipment and carry out your shoots. Your images should be highlight the theme and nature of these events and must engage the public. Be responsible and consider appropriate ethics and working practices. Establish permission from those you photograph and obtain names. If you are photographing people under the age of 16 you must receive parental permission. You will need to collect enough information for the captions I.E, names, ages, occupations, ect. Remember, faces sell papers, think creatively but your shots need to work in a regional paper. Show editing decisions on contact sheets and select 4 images for submission. Apply minor post-processing changes and editing to meet the requirements described in the submission form.
