STYLING
SEMESTER 1
WHAT IM DOING
For this unit, I am going to be looking further into the food and drink industry, as one of my main focuses in photography is fashion I wanted to spread my wings a bit to see what else there is for me to capture. I have captured images of water and coffee in a cocktail glass and I am going to see what I can do with the images in terms of editing and promoting. I want to use these images for advertisement and I am going to put together a few different Ideas.
BEHIND THE SCENES
These images were all captured behind the scenes. I wanted to make sure I got a few pictures to back up the process of how my final images were documented. I used two different snoot lights that directed beams of light onto my object I was photographing. I kept the studio in complete darkness and worked of the lights I had, I needed to do this so there was no shadows showing in the back of the photos.
CAPTURED IMAGES
For styling these images, I wanted them to be quiet dark and clean, so I used a black cloth under the drinks and made all the background dark so there was nothing to interupt the images. Once I had the glass positioned in level with the camera I started capturing the images, I dropped the liquids into the glasses and captured the it as it was falling into the glass and I am more than happy with how these turned out.
CROPPED IMAGES
I decided to crop the images to make the actual drop stand out more, cropping the images defines whats actually going on in this shoot, I am really happy with how these images have turned out as I dont usually work with photographing food and drinks.
I am more than happy with how these images have turned out. I am now going to edit them so they get the advertisement theme to them. I will document how I edit them through screenshots.
This is one of my final outcomes for advertisement, I used my ipad and apple pencil and an app called pro-create to put this together. I wanted the image to still stand out and be the subject of the picture so I didn't want the text to take away the main object of the image. I am really happy with how this image has turned out with the text layered over.
STYLIST RESPOSIBILITIES
A photographer stylist is either the actual photographer or someone on hand at the shoot who styles either the models or the props, the stylist is usually the person to clean up around and make sure everything that is being photographed is styled to the best of its own ability. They help set the scene for the photograph or shoot. They usually come in their own particular area, so either food, interior design or fashion.
Looking further into stylists I have found a few food photographers who style their work in a well represented way, the way they make the food look really sells the food that has been cooked, just from displaying it in a certain way it makes it much more of massive impact.
Joanie Simon is a food stylist / photographer all self taught, she created a youtube channel to document her work and after it all blowing up now she has an outstanding crowd of 136 thousand subscribers and she features weekly videos pn her channel for her food photography community. In her videos she talks about colour theory and how she displays her work as well as DIY backdrops that she creates and all of the props she makes to go in her photographs.
Her style of work is really interesting, she makes all the colours pop and she doesn't allow anything to take away the attention of the main subject, she is a very successful photographer and has been contacted by big food brands for their advertisement.
