MATERIAL SELECTION AND SPECIFICATION

UNIT 50

During this unit I am going to focus on lines. All different lines and different methods of photographing lines and structures. I am going to capture images in different ways and edit, develop and process them in more than one way. The idea of photographing and printing these images is giving me interest. Once I have captured the images, I want to edit them in different ways as well as using different development methods.

Whilst I am doing this project I don't just want to focus on straight lines, I would like to focus on different multiple lines, straight lines, curved lines, wiggly lines, distorted lines, ect.

I am going to add a few different photographers who have used lines in their work for inspiration and then start to process my own methods of this work.

During the past 25 years Jason M. Peterson has been capturing black and white images, pushing himself as well as his persistant artistic efforts have gained him a world wide following of over 1 million strong followers on his Instagram platform. "To me, my photos aren't about black and white at all," Peterson stated to The Modern Met. "I am trying to capture human emotion, make the viewer feel something. Black and white helps focus on that emotion—colour is one less thing to be in the way of seeing the feeling."

Peterson is very well educated when it comes to bringing out the best in shadows, playing with lines, angles or even just composing a single shot. His portfolio offers a wide range of work from street parties to cityscapes. Its bold and graphic. Peterson has a way of telling strong visual stories though his work. As it is stated above he bases a lot of his work on human emotion.

I love the way Jason M. Peterson represents his work, I think he has a very strong detailed eye and knows where and how to capture certain objects in certain circumstances. His use of lines in his work is extreme, he allows it all to just fall together and he manages to capture the lines in so many different ways.

Zuckerman stated that his orientation for his work over the past 45 years was to "follow his heart", he didn't put commercial considerations first, instead he put his passion for photography before anything else. This is how he kept himself excited about photography from the start to now. He says that his fear growing up was that he was going to be bored of his "chosen career" but he was successful in steering his directions in the opposite way and stayed away from that.

Zuckerman has captured images all over the world in all different contexts, he has done portraiture images, landscapes, set scenes, nature and many, many more. All of his images are strong, powerful, colourful content and he always manages to capture certain moments that look incredible on camera.

Personally, I love how Zuckerman has been able to capture his images, he finds such natural spaces but angles the camera in the right way to capture the movement of lines that are in the picture. I think this is what makes him a brilliant photographer, his use of lines in his images make the picture look so well captured. I also really like the way he uses colour, his use of colour is so bright it makes the images look as if they aren't real, but its just the way he has captured them.

Josephson is recognised as a pioneer of conceptual photography. Exploring the concepts of photographic illusions through his career, he has produced a large range of work that shows many techniques of collage to numerous amounts of exposures and negative photographs. Kenneth shows all the illusive highlights of natural photography.

He uses a wide range of lines in his work, though shooting images that include portraiture, he still manages to use the work of lines, I like the series of images above, from a series he did in 2002. The way he used shadows as well as focusing the images on lines is so clever.

I think Kenneth Josephson use of line work is very clever, he has used a numerous amount of books to put together for one image, this is a very good way of seeing how lines can combine within each-other. Book pages contain a lot of compressed lines and he took advantage of this and was able to capture it in such an amazing way.

Due to having to stay home, I have used an image that I had saved which I thought captured a good use of lines in the image, the other images are ones that I have taken around the house, I think there is a good use of lines around you when you open your eyes to see thats what you are looking for. All of these images are un-edited I am going to edit them in my own way. I just wanted to show the before pictures before I did anything to them, although I do like how these have come around from just using my phone around the house I thought I was able to capture a fair few images that contained lines.

All I did for these images was edit them all in the same way, I used a black and white filter called "NOIR", as well as that filter I lowered the exposure of the images to -5 on each one of them. I love how they have all turned out and I am happy with how dramatic the images actually look, the black and white contrast really works when you're working with lines.

I took inspiration from Jason M. Peterson, and I am more than happy with how they have turned out, to take this further I could start to use some distortion in the images and work the lines in different ways. There is many different things for me to capture so I am going to find larger scaled lines to work with and try and develop my skills with working in the lighting and shadow section.

This is my digital photo book I created to display my first load of images from my line photography project. I wanted to keep it all dark and moody so it connects with my images. I like how the images don't contrast with the background colour and I love how they all just work with one another. I wanted to add some quotes into the book so it feels a little more personal when people are looking at it. I am happy with how this turned out. I used the website www.canva.com to put this online photo book together. I would like to do another one of these but using images that contain colour so I can see the difference they have between each other. I would like to do one in the same style of Jim Zuckerman.

Theses images are little snapshots I captured during my walk around Liverpool City Centre, I kept an eye out for close line details and tried to see what I could pull together looking at lines, both of these sets of images contain many lines and I think they all work with each other. These images are all un-edited, I am going to edit them in the same stye as I did recently.

I have edited these images in the exact same style as the ones above. In the same style as Jason M. Peterson. I am happy with how these images have turned out, the colours contrast against each other and make the lines of the image stand out.
